1990, TV series
Jay's role: Ponyboy Curtis

In his first role, Jay played Ponyboy Curtis in the television series that picked up where the movie The Outsiders left off.  The show, which aired on Fox network, ran for only thirteen episodes before being canceled.

Jay starred along with Boyd Kestner (Darrel Curtis), Rodney Harvey (Sodapop Curtis), Harold Pruett (Steve Randle), David Arquette (Two-Bit Mathews), Robert Rusler (Tim Shepard), Kim Walker (Cherry Valance), and Billy Bob Thorton (Buck Merrill).

Summary

Ponyboy Curtis is an introspective young teen living in 1960's Oklahoma with his two older brothers, Darry (Boyd Kestner) and Sodapop (Rodney Harvey).  Because their parents were killed several months earlier, the boys are only allowed to stay together as long as they behave.  Considering these boys are greasers living on the wrong side of the tracks, where crime is prevalent and money in short supply, good behavior isn't always an easy option.

Comparison to the book and movie

While Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film adaptation of S.E. Hinton's novel followed the book closely, the TV series took some liberties with both the setting and the characters.  For example:
  • Buck Merrill, who Ponyboy had been told to avoid in the book version, is the owner of a gas station and bar where Ponyboy's brother Sodapop works.
  • Tim Shepard, who was only briefly mentioned in the book, is a close friend of Darry's in the series, and there is no mention of his younger brother, Curly.
  • The fictional town of Walker Ridge is the setting in the series rather than Tulsa, which was the setting of the book and movie.
  • Ponyboy, who was fourteen years old in the book, is fifteen in the series
